The time to plant garlic is fast approaching! The general rule of thumb is to not plant garlic until after the autumnal equinox in late September, which is coming up soon! By planting garlic now, it will be one of the first things to come up in your garden in the spring, as garlic is sensitive to day length.
To start planting garlic you must begin with proper soil: They need deeply cultivated, well-draining, rich soil with a pH of 6.4 to 6.8. Add 2 to 3 inches of compost and well-rotted manure to the bed before planting.
To plant Garlic Cloves remember:
Separate the Cloves: Just before planting, separate the garlic bulb into individual cloves. (TIP!) Choose the largest cloves for planting, as they tend to produce the biggest bulbs.
Planting Depth: Plant the cloves about 2 inches deep with the pointed end facing up. Space them 4-6 inches apart to allow for ample bulb development.
Mulching: After planting, cover the area with a layer of mulch, such as straw or leaves. This will help insulate the soil and prevent weeds from competing with your garlic.
After ensuring that the soil remains moist, the mulch will protect the garlic from any extreme colds throughout the winter, and in spring the garlic will begin to sprout and grow.
